<image:caption>"The only thing that was important was what happened outside of school. That had a huge impact on me. People and relationships, slow dancing parties, big, big love and dreams. Dark, fantastic dreams" - David Lynch Like David Lynch, I see my life experiences, relationships and reflexivity as my biggest and most impactful teachers. If you’re interested in my formal qualifications and experience, these are listed below: MSc in Contemporary Person-Centred Psychotherapy and Applications (Metanoia Institute, Ealing) Certificate in Clinical Supervision (Metanoia Institute, Ealing) Diploma in Person-Centred Psychotherapy (Metanoia Institute, Ealing) Foundation Certificate in Humanistic Counselling Skills and Studies (Metanoia Institute, Ealing) BA(hons) English Language and Literature, King’s College London I am a member of and registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) I am committed to enhancing my practice through regular ongoing CPD (continuing professional development) which includes attending courses and workshops, encounter groups and reading. I have been in practice as a therapist since 2014. Before starting my private practice in Manchester, I worked as a therapist in various agency settings, including for Mind in Tower Hamlets, the Centre for Better Health in Hackney and for Metanoia’s own counselling service MCPS. I have volunteered as a Samaritan, and currently volunteer with a not-for-profit community organisation delivering harm reduction and welfare at live events, clubs and festivals. Prior to working as a therapist, I worked in the creative industries for a number of years. While I trained and for some time after I qualified I worked in the third (charity) sector. I have extensive experience working with LGBTQIA+ and GSRD (gender, sexuality and relationship diverse) people. I am queer myself, and I immensely enjoy working with folks in my community with whatever they may wish to bring to therapy. My practice is SW and kink-friendly. Some themes I have helped people with include anxiety, depression, anger, addictions, relationship difficulties, life transitions, feelings of ‘stuckness’, losses in all their forms, clients wishing to explore their identity, non-monogamy and polyamory, low self-esteem, concerns with work, trauma and many others. I also have experience working with neurodiversity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - My story.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m Ember (she/they) and I’m a Person-Centred psychotherapist working in-person in Manchester, or online if you’re based elsewhere in the UK. Since I was very young, I have been deeply interested in our personal stories. What shapes us and makes us who we are… how we make sense of and give meaning to our experiences… what hurts and what heals us. To quote Bella Baxter in the film Poor Things: “I am finding being alive fascinating”. My first degree was in English Language and Literature (mostly because I loved reading). This really opened my eyes to the richness of what it means to be human. I adored being immersed in so many different cultures and reflecting on what it all meant. How we tell and give meaning to our stories, making sense of what has happened and is happening to us. Thinking about this now, this is very similar to how I see therapy. Following uni I fell into a role in advertising, moving between various agencies and studios for a few years. I enjoyed the energy of these roles, but something wasn’t sitting right with me. I went to therapy myself after feeling very lost, and experiencing anxiety and depression. From engaging with therapy, I began to develop a deeper, more compassionate understanding of myself and what changes I needed to make for myself in order to move forwards. I took an introductory course to Humanistic Counselling Skills and Studies at Metanoia Institute, Ealing and knew this was going to be my new path from day one. The same year, I moved into the third (charity) sector, and started my MSc in Contemporary Person-Centred Psychotherapy and Applications. After almost seven years of working and studying, I qualified as a UKCP-registered psychotherapist. Outside work I love spending as much time outdoors as possible – being in nature is grounding for me and an essential part of my self care. I enjoy keeping active by doing aerial arts and going to the gym. I love reading, films, music, making (and eating) delicious food and spending time with my friends. I volunteer with a not-for-profit community organisation delivering harm reduction and welfare at live events, clubs and festivals. I’m a devoted cat parent to a very chaotic but adorable rescue cat.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My approach - My approach to therapy.</image:title>
<image:caption>I work from a Person-Centred philosophy. The essence of this approach is the belief that within a warm, supportive, non-judgmental relationship, you can reconnect with yourself, find your voice and develop a clearer understanding of any changes you wish to make to live a life that feels best for you. What I am offering is a relationship unlike any other, where you are free to bring yourself, just as you are, without any judgement. Rather than offering my opinions, advice or guidance, my role is to create an accepting and empathic space where we can work together exploring, reflecting on and processing areas of your life that you feel need tending to. While there is a time and place for advice, tools and strategies, this is not the way I work. The reason for this is that I firmly believe that experiencing a non-judgemental and validating environment can help you creatively connect with your own resources as well as developing understanding, compassion and self-acceptance. When we can really pay attention ourselves, we can notice that perhaps some of the answers we need are already there, just waiting to emerge.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What is therapy - What is therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>Therapy is a safer space to be yourself and be heard and accepted just as you are. It’s a space for nurturing yourself, developing understanding and sparking creativity. Therapy doesn’t have to be a space you only come to at a point of crisis, it is also a valuable space (away from the noise of external advice and opinions) to develop new ways of understanding yourself and explore more satisfying ways of living that feel right for you. In therapy, together, we can look at where you’ve been, where you are right now, and where you hope to move forwards to. Therapy gives you a space to get back in touch with yourself and find your voice. Deeply-held assumptions about yourself (and the world) can be gently questioned, challenging emotions are released, explored and shared - many people find it a relief to finally share these things with their therapist. As well as a space to meet the parts of ourselves that might be hurting, overwhelmed or anxious, therapy can also be a space to reconnect with joy, passion and humour. Quite often, therapy leads to new insights about yourself. These can become the first steps towards making the changes in life that you’re looking for.</image:caption>

<image:title>Will therapy help me - Will therapy help me?</image:title>
<image:caption>If you feel ready to work for the change you would like in your life, are prepared to explore things which you find difficult, and are willing to be honest and reflective about yourself, then you are probably ready to give therapy a go. If you approach therapy with an inquisitive and open frame of mind, the chances are it will be helpful for you. Some people hope that I will advise them on what to do, or offer tools and strategies to help them achieve their goals. There is a time and a place these, however this is not the way I work. Instead, I offer the kind of relationship where you can get creative, listen to yourself and decide for yourself what would be best for you. Therapy does not have the answers, but it is a place where answers can be found.</image:caption>

<image:title>What happens in a therapy session - What happens in a therapy session?</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m all about making therapy accessible and relatable. For me, therapy is a place where you can really be yourself and be heard. During the first session, I will spend some time asking you a few questions to get a picture of what’s happening for you right now and to understand what you hope to get out of therapy. I will also explain some key elements of my practice to you, such as confidentiality. You may also ask me any questions you like about the process. If we decide to work together, our sessions will be guided by you. What is brought to therapy is unique to everyone, and you are always welcome to bring whatever you wish to therapy. Nothing is ever off-topic or irrelevant. We will work together at exploring your concerns at a pace you find comfortable. I understand it might feel difficult at first exploring things that perhaps you’ve never spoken about before, particularly with someone new. We will go gently, only addressing issues when you feel comfortable. .</image:caption>
